Lolita’s Personality

Lolita's Care
For a long time activists have been lobbying for Lolita's retirement from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's return to the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped Lolita might have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to go back to the ocean.
The people who are Lolita's captors – the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her with high-speed circles and head-first dives that expose her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and weakening her immune system. They also put her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as an ancestor in a plan to eventually move her to open waters. The plan would have included a facility on Washington's west coast where she could stay for the duration of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and surrounded by the actual ocean, not a concrete tank.
If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are social animals and are close to their family members until death. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for over 40 years. Activists from across the country have called for Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and then release into the wild.
